Norm Bailey, (right) Commodore of the Newport Yacht Club was in Plymouth England for the start of the 2009 OSTAR. As the representative for the U.S. end of the race Norm was treated to a very special reception and lunch with Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
His Royal Highness started the race from the deck of the 84m GALATEA Monday and then hosted a VIP lunch that included Newport’s own, Norman Bailey. Prince Philip is a keen sailor and yachtsman and reported to be a very good host.
GALATEA is a Multi Functional Tender (MFT), launched in 2007. At 84m long with a service speed of 13 knots, she is fitted to the highest and most modern technical standards. She was designed for buoy handling, wreck marking, towing and hydrographic surveying.
Having lunch with Prince Philip and catching the start of an OSTAR aboard a high tech ship. Sounds like fun!
