Challenge & Adventure Sail News • Search for Used and Brokerage Yachts
I am not directly effected. My sailing occurs elsewhere. However, this is a patently dumb location for a LNG terminal. Quonset Point makes more sense. Point Judith Harbor of refuge makes more sents. Off shore makes more sense.
However there is a railhead at Fall River. As I recal CSX comes into Fall River. There is also a rail head at Quonset Point. I beleive that this is the Worcester Providence. I know that it is MUCH more expensive.
Of course piplines cost money also.
Assuming that the shipping rate remains at 70 round trips a year (I would expect it to increase dramatically over time), this represents the busiest part of Narragansett Bay being shut done about 1/2 of the year. This is an incredible negative impact to the Rhode Island economy, and the toursit industry in particular.
I have not seen a what I accept as a compelling explination for Fall River especially when compared with other sites. However, I have seen a strong unified grass roots opposition, I have seen a consistant negative position from goverment authorities. So I do not understand why this is even an issue any more. It should be put formally and permanently rejected and let’s get on with life.
Some reasonable goals include:
A comprehensive long range plan for Narragansett Bay. This should be a living document that continues to eveolve.
Fall River in general and Weavers cove in particular is an attractive site for commercial shipping. How can this be improved on and developed?
Quonsett Point is also has unrealized potential as a commercail site (including air cargo).
What is involved in an off shore terminal? Rhode Island should assist siting a terminal in a “best use” location either here or elsewhere.
