J/95 Spied

03/15/09
J/95, hull #001 - Here’s a sneak peak at what J/Boats is building.

LOA 31.2′ / LWL 28.4′
Beam 10.0′ / Draft 3.0′/5.5′
Disp 6,000 lbs / Ballast 2,450 lbs
Keel/centerboard / Bronze CB 200 lbs
Removable (open) transom
Twin ruddersWheel Steering
Carbon mast option

The obvious: great cockpit, good looks, experienced and trusted builder. The not so obvious: Will the market warm up to a keel/centerboarder? Let’s hope so because this is a cool little boat. Rod Johnstone is stepping outside of the box and deserves big credit for that. Shoal draft is not an issue here in Rhode Island but it sure is in a lot of places and running aground gets old fast.

Thanks to JP at East Coast Yacht Sales for leaking the images. They’re the newly appointed RI dealer for J/Boats so he was in the factory Thursday checking things out and took these shots. Timing was perfect because we get to see the interesting part before it’s installed. The lead and bronze component looks rock solid and has to be an expensive piece to build. That’s a Spectron lifting pennant from Hall Spars. There should be no worries with that set up!

Racing this boat will be fun and making centerboard adjustments will certainly be one of the ways to squeeze out more speed. Twin rudders for control complete the package and keep the draft down too. This boat will get a lot of press when it’s sailing and it should, because it just may be the answer for a lot of shallow water sailors.

Look for this one to be sailing soon.  details
