For First Time Ever, Cruising World and Sailing World Magazines choose the same boat as “Boat of the Year” and it’s J/95! – Image Governor Donald L. Carcieri & Jeff Johnstone.
Thursday was the big day and there was a large crowd on hand at C&C Fiberglass Components in Bristol, RI. Bonnier Publishing, parent of Cruising World & Sailing World was there in full force to present the awards and ran a really nice event. Governor Donald L. Carcieri was present along with many of the local businesses that are vendors for the J/95 project.
Jeff Johnstone, the President of J/Boats, received the awards and remarked on the fact that the J/95 now being sold and shipped around the world is very much a Rhode Island effort. Given J/Boats clout they could be building anywhere but have stayed in Rhode Island. The company is able to get good products here at competitive prices and seem pretty happy about that. Here is a short list of the local companies that are J/Boats suppliers:
C&C Fiberglass Components, Bayside Navigation, Cam Machine, Composite One, Hall Spars, International Marine and Thurston Canvas, all of Bristol; Ken’s Canvas and Stanley’s Boat Yard of Barrington; Atlantic Plywood of East Providence; Harken Yacht Equipment, Newport; Global BSI of Portsmouth; I. Bloomfield & Sons of Providence and Modern Plastics of Warwick.
It should also be noted that Cruising World and Sailing World magazines are also Rhode Island based and operated so there were lots of familiar faces.
The event marks a real bright spot for J/Boats and the local marine industry. Not only has the J/95 just won big but in the next room the molds for the J/111 are coming together fast. If you have followed the buzz about that you know J/Boats could be on the podium again next year.
