12-metres-copyCatch a Ride as 17th crew on a 12 Metre during the Worlds!

With up to 20 yachts and crews coming from across the USA and France, and crews from Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, the 12 Metre World Championships September 22 – 27 in Newport, RI will bring back America’s Cup memories and create vivid new ones for those sponsors lucky enough to land a “17th Crew” position on a racing Twelve during the Worlds.

“17th Crew” are part of every 12 Metre Worlds sponsorship package. They come with a unique Atlantis WeatherGear sailing vest along with a 12 Metre Worlds hat and tickets for that day’s dockside party. For each “17th Crew sponsorship, $250 is designated as a donation to the Seamen’s Church Institute of Newport. Sponsorships begin at $2000.

Although the “17th Crew” is a non-active observer position, this is a unique opportunity to feel the wind as these powerful sailboats crash through the waves and grasp the tension in the crew’s actions as you approach the finish line,” said Jan Slee, Class President. As he explained it, any one lucky enough to land a 17th Crew position will be looking up at the sails which appear to touch the clouds. They can hang their legs over the side as the boat heels over. Hear the voices of the skipper and tactician as they interact with the sailors. Celebrate if your team wins and takes its historic “harbor burn” trip around Newport Harbor toasting the other competitors and the spectators. Watch the Video Short on the home page of www.goldenyear2009.com and check out the website to learn more about sponsorship and the 17th Crew.

Get in a 12 Metre mood, make September 2009 special and come to the 12 Metre Worlds. In addition to the 17th Crew and four America’s Cup winners and many Defenders competing, the regatta has several other features. The regatta will be filmed by Jobson Sailing, Inc. for airing on ESPN Classic; the online Regatta Store is complete with Atlantis WeatherGear, cool Island Outfitter items and12 Metre books; and our Legend Forums where 12 Metre stars from the past will participate in four moderated Forums. While you are in Newport, visit the Museum of Yachting’s exhibit on the America’s Cup: the Newport Years (1930-1983 when Cup syndicates competed in majestic J/Class and 12-Metre yachts).

September 22-27 in Newport, RI is the place where the America’s Cup memories will flow. 12 Metres… still racing, still elegant!
