About the webcams

Riyachting.com is now operating three webcams in Newport that you can visit to check “on-the water conditions” 24-7. Webcam #1 is installed on the roof top of the Goat Island Hyatt Regency and looks NW toward Rose Island and the Newport Pell Bridge. Webcam #2 is also on the Hyatt roof and points SW toward the entrance of Narragansett Bay with a view of Fort Adams and Beaver tail light house in the distance. These cams are about 110’ above sea level and are enclosed in weather proof fixtures. Webcam #3 is installed indoors at the Museum of Yachting at Fort Adams. This cam looks NE into the harbor entrance and picks up the south side of Goat Island in the background. All three cameras present fixed views and cannot be zoomed or directed remotely by the visitors or by riyachting.com. Each camera uploads an image to our server every 5 -12 seconds and the images are archived for 5-10 days. The element that influences the images most is the sun and it’s location. In general the best images are produced when the sun is behind the camera. However, at dawn and dusk the images change rapidly and all three locations can produce some really interesting views and colors. If you have difficulty seeing the expanded views or get a gray screen, updating your Java software will usually do the trick. Special thanks to the Hyatt Regency Newport and The Museum of Yachting, enjoy. 10/02/08
