In recent years, advances in technology and science have enabled humans to create almost anything so quickly and efficiently that we’re often shocked and unsettled when asked to wait for something. We’re living in an age where many photographers and filmmakers shoot “digitally”. Art, architecture and design are often created on computers and correspondence is instantaneous and “online”. However, there are still some objects that time, science and technology have yet to plot a shortcut to. Finely detailed custom models of ships and yachts are among those objects. A great model builder requires a mastery of many exacting skill sets. He or she must at the very least be a draftsman, a woodworker, a machinist, a jeweler and a painter. It should also help to have infinite patience and the hands of a surgeon. Joseph Wheeler Appleton (1900 – 1958) was just such a craftsman.
The Appleton exhibit was put together by Jay Picotte in the new IYRS library. It’s only there until Sept. 15 and it is an unbelievable collection of some of the best yacht models ever built, all from private collections. (more…)

bostonherald.com - New England boat builders say shame on Sen. John Kerry for buying a $7 million New Zealand-built luxury yacht while local ship makers struggle to find work.
“Darn, that would have been a wonderful job for a Maine builder,” said Jane Wellehan, president of the trade group Maine Built Boats. “If someone comes to build a $7 million boat that would employ half the population of some towns for a year or two. Boat building is such a critical component of our coastal economy.”

“When you have higher temperatures, you’re at a higher risk to have those low oxygen events, and that can cause fish kills,” Stoffel explains.
Warmer water can also help fuel hurricanes. “That’s definitely on our radar,” Stoffel said.
newport-now.com – NEWPORT, R.I. – Newport will not play host to the next America’s Cup.
Just days after the Cup and members from BMW Oracle Racing visited Rhode Island on an east coast victory tour, team CEO Larry Ellison announced that San Francisco would be the only American city considered for the next Cup match.
Monday July 20. The first half of the biennial New York Yacht Club Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex, which finished up yesterday for seven classes, has also now concluded for five more one-design classes that have been racing since Saturday. The catch, however, was that today’s first race had to be abandoned and then competition cancelled when severe thunderstorms passed over Rhode Island Sound, leaving winners to be determined by cumulative standings posted yesterday.
