Puma left Spain today headed for Newport and Ken Read has made an announcement about who will be on his Core Team.
PUMA Ocean Racing - April 29, – Today Ken Read, skipper of PUMA Ocean Racing, announced his core crew and management team for the upcoming Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012. The team departs Alicante, Spain today to bring il mostro, PUMA Ocean Racing’s boat that secured a 2nd place finish in the last Volvo Ocean Race, back to Newport, Rhode Island where the team will immediately start training for the next race. il mostro will serve as the team’s training boat until a new boat, which will compete in the 2011-12 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race, is completed.

The Brown Bears win the Reed Trophy and Harvard finishes second. Both teams will move on to the ICSA Women\’s Nationals Finals to be sailed later in May at the University of Wisconsin. Congratulations as well to Boston College, Connecticut College, Tufts, Yale, and Dartmouth who finished third through seventh respectively and will compete at the Women\’s National Semi-finals at the University of Wisconsin. She is being built in post cured Epoxy. The hull is uni-directional S-glass w/ Nomex honeycomb and SP Core-Cell A500 foam core. All structural and interior partitions are carbon and foam cored. The beams and Amas were female molded and also built in foam cored carbon. The interior will feature white Awl Grip surfaces and laminated Cherry trim. (more…)
A NOAA marine mammal aerial survey team based at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center’s laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass., has sighted nearly 100 endangered North Atlantic right whales feeding in Rhode Island Sound, the largest group ever documented in those waters.
“It all started with a flukeprint,” said Pete Duley, whale researcher at NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center who was on the team that spotted the whales on April 20. Full story.
