We just stumble into these images from the Volvo Ocean Race Boston stopover. The creatively branded True North Yachts served as hospitality boats for spectators. Ken Read the skipper of il mostro owns a True North 38 and that’s the connection but I am not sure if one of these is his. Pearson Composites builds the True North 34, 38 and 47 in Warren RI. Here are a few more fun shots.

(NECN: Scot Yount, Bourne, Mass.) - It was the end of an exhausting journey for French ocean rower Charlie Girard, who returned to firm ground after aborting his second attempt at a Transatlantic row.
Clearly, Girard had misjudged the mental anguish the journey would impart.
He set off from the Orleans Yacht Club on May 19th. With his wife and father nearby, the adventurer seemed confident he could make it this time.

The Rhode Island-based company’s SV-40 model dominated the Evolution class in its debut season, with OSG romping to Powerboat P1 gold in 2006. Now with the American outfit also equipping championship rivals #77 Lucas Oil, it could be a very happy boatyard in 2009.
The Powerboat P1 World Championship provides an ideal opportunity for Outerlimits to integrate key learning’s into the construction of its pleasure boats. The 2009 Annapolis to Newport Race will start June 5th, the 62nd anniversary of the race. The course record of 42 hours, 58 minutes, 12 seconds set by Carrera, Joseph Dockery’s Farr 60 skippered by Chris Larson in 2001, is clearly threatened by entries such as George David’s 91′ maxi Rambler with Peter Isler aboard as navigator and Jim Grundy’s brand new custom Tripp 75 Bella Pita as well as perennial contender for line honors, Jim Muldoon aboard his custom 72′ Donnybrook. In addition, four 53 footers and Ennio Steffini’s 52′ Judel Vrolik Anema&Core assure that the battle at the front of the fleet will be intense.
There is another notable entry quite unlike the new all out race machines. It is Prim, a classic beauty. She is a modified Owens 41, entered by Henry Gibbons-Neff. Prim’s first Annapolis to Newport Race was in 1955 sailed by Morton Gibbons-Neff Jr. 54 years later this will be her 12th race. She already has two class wins. Prim has been owned and sailed by the Gibbons-Neff family of Easton, Maryland throughout her career.
You will be able to follow the race on the internet via iBoat Track transponders on each boat thanks to sponsorship by the Barbados Tourism Authority. Coverage will be better than ever with hourly updates.
The Annapolis to Newport Race is one of the most historic and well-known of the U.S. East Coast blue water races. First run 62 years ago from Newport to Annapolis, it links two seaports dating from our nation’s birth. The race provides challenging diversity over different bodies of water, as well as convenient ports of refuge along the entire course. As a result, the race is a favorite for first-time offshore competitors, as well as experienced blue water racers. The Annapolis Yacht Club and the New York Yacht Club are the Organizing Authority for the race, with assistance from the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron and Ida Lewis Yacht Club. race website

Bluefish invaded many of the coves in Greenwich Bay on Wednesday night, said Ken Ferrara of Ray’s Bait & Tackle. The blues were pretty large, around 10 pounds apiece.
The biggest bass in the Bay are still preying on pogies in the Providence River, he said, but there are plenty of stripers in the 30- to 37-inch range in the waters of Mill Cove and off Longmeadow, Rocky Point and Bear Point. School bass have been nailing flies, Kastmasters and plugs off Pine Hill and Chepiwanoxet. Full report

Norm Bailey, (right) Commodore of the Newport Yacht Club was in Plymouth England for the start of the 2009 OSTAR. As the representative for the U.S. end of the race Norm was treated to a very special reception and lunch with Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.
His Royal Highness started the race from the deck of the 84m GALATEA Monday and then hosted a VIP lunch that included Newport’s own, Norman Bailey. Prince Philip is a keen sailor and yachtsman and reported to be a very good host.
GALATEA is a Multi Functional Tender (MFT), launched in 2007. At 84m long with a service speed of 13 knots, she is fitted to the highest and most modern technical standards. She was designed for buoy handling, wreck marking, towing and hydrographic surveying.
