Winter projects in Bristol

East Passage Boatwrights is working on two interesting restorations that will keep them busy through spring 2009. Like most of their projects these two will be a team effort. The company is owned and run by three Partners, Nick Eide, Seth Hagen and Carter Richardson. They are all graduates of IYRS in Newport and work pretty much exclusively in wood. The shop is 70′ deep with two big overhead doors so they can accommodate just about anything that can travel over the road. Many of the boats they repair are old but the shop is in a new building and features natural light. It looks like a nice place to work. (more…)

What do these images have in common?

“She’s a formidable vessel, sir. I stopped counting at 237 gun ports.”
“Should we tell the men, or let it be a surprise?”
“Oh no, let it be a surprise. I look forward to Captain Higgs’ reaction.”
“Ho ho! Let us hope he wore his brown breeches today!”

Tuesday December 2nd Tom Daniels and company installed the final plank (the shutter plank) in Cherokee. We have posted links to his progress in the past but that does not do this project justice. You see, Tom is not just a craftsman who builds beautiful yachts. He’s a wordsmith and a blogger too! What these images have in common is that they appear in the Cherokee blog authored by Tom. The project is the building of the new Olin Stephen’s designed 6 Metre yacht Cherokee that is taking place at the Museum of Yachting. His writing is not only an amazing description of the art of boat building but very entertaining. Yes, Tom swerves into whisky, Buddhist Monks and wooden fish. And one of his posts is entitled; “Wild bung, you make my heart young.” But the process is very well documented and the images are great. Making this all possible is the Boothbay Harbor Shipyard and Dave Stimson. He is heading up the project which is being jointly sponsored by Boothbay Harbor Shipyard and the Museum of Yachting. Boothbay has generously donated the wood and Dave’s time. Visit them at boothbayharborshipyard.com/

Jim Johnstone joins Gowrie

12/05/08 The Gowrie Group of Companies announced today that Jim Johnstone will be joining the company as a producer in the Boat/Yacht department. “We are thrilled that Jim, with his extensive marine background, will be joining our team of marine insurance experts.” says Ed Gumbrecht, the firm’s Chief Operating Officer.

Jim brings deep marine and sailing industry expertise that will enable Gowrie to broaden its reach into the boating market and the Rhode Island community served by Gowrie’s Newport office.

Jim’s sailing industry and racing pedigree can be matched by very few. For the past 14 years Jim has been a key sales manager and production manager for J/Boats Inc. Prior to working at J/Boats, Jim spent 3 years working and racing on Shamrock V, a classic J-boat. Jim won the Laser Radial World Championships at age 18, and has won many championships within the J/Boat classes.

Jim currently lives in Barrington, RI with his wife and three children.

In other J/Boats news: At the annual J/44 awards party held at New York Yacht Club last month, Jim Bishop of New York, NY was presented the 2008 J Boats Leadership Award by Jeff Johnstone, president of J Boats. (more…)

More stuff to run into. Wave action platforms!

More stuff to run into. Wave action platforms!

Grays Harbor Ocean Energy Co. filed a permit application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to erect 100 structures similar to offshore oil platforms in a 96-square-mile area 12 to 25 miles south of Block Island. The structures would use wave energy to pump air through turbines to create electricity. – projo.com

Let’s just hope they are better at building platforms then they are at building websites. This is what it could look like.  Full story at projo.com

WOW (words of wisdom) – Steve K,
When asked to cite his favorite racing conditions Paul Elvstrom replied, “A storm.” Though I do not possess the skill or expertise that Elvstrom had in his day, I do find racing in driving sleet and rain in 35 degree temperatures and a squirrelly 10-15 knot breeze a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Rhode Island Marine trade news

Rhode Island Marine trade news

Spanning just 1,045 square miles, Rhode Island is the smallest state in the union. Despite its compact geography, however, the Ocean State holds itself up as one of the best places in the country for marine businesses. In fact, many of those connected to the marine industry there say Rhode Island’s size is a major benefit. Story - Melanie Winters Trade Only today.
