11/14/08 The Dockwise transport SUPER SERVANT 3 arrived in Newport this week and loaded with an interesting mix of yachts headed to St. Thomas, USVI. If you have not seen it, this is one of the ships that sink below the water so that the yachts can float on and into place. Once loaded they pump the ballast and the transport is above the surface again. Among the 29 vessels loaded were two brand new water taxis and a large 120 foot motor yacht. The water taxis were built by Blount boats in Warren RI and will make their way to San Juan Puerto Rico. They have the capacity to carry 49 passengers and will be part of the public transit system.
Dockwise made their first delivery from Newport in 2001. The cargo was a fleet of sailboats and support boats being delivered to the America’s Cup Jubilee regatta in Cowes. The Newport schedule has now grown to six visits with two spring deliveries from the south. Two summer trips to Europe and two in the fall going south. They will be back in May with many of these same boats.
11/12/08 New Gretna, New Jersey. Viking Yachts shows off designs for a new 42 convertible and a 42 Open. The 42 hull will represent the small end of the line up which will extend to 82′ when they officially present the 82 Convertible at the Miami show in February. Both boats will feature mezzanine seating on deck and be powered with Volvo IPS pod drives. The pod drives will allow Viking to really open up the interior and offer both designs with an optional two head two stateroom layout. Look for them in 2009. More at Vikingyachts.com
